January can be a dark month – short days, long nights, and cold weather abound. But there is brightness to look forward to as well, even after the last of the Christmas decorations have been put away. January will see the third-round matches for the FA Cup played over the 4th, 5th and 6th of the month. Meanwhile, fourth-round matches will follow on the 26th and 27th January. That should give football fans something to look forward to as the month progresses.
Tranmere will play Tottenham on the evening of the 4th, while 22 matches are slated to be played on the 5th – the first Saturday after New Year. The remaining matches will then take place on Sunday. The results of those matches will then determine the teams to take part in the fourth round of the 2018-19 competition. We are still a long way from determining which teams will reach the latter stages. Following the fourth round in January, a fifth round will then take place in February. Eight matches will be played at that stage. From there, four matches will be played in the quarter finals, before reaching the semis and then the final. This match takes place in May, some months away at present.
While lesser-known clubs take part in qualifying for the FA Cup, they do not all reach the competition proper. Those that do rarely go on to reach the latter stages of the competition. However, there have been cases where a smaller club has enacted a giant-killing – an unlikely victory that is remembered for years to come. Will the FA Cup 2018-19 see any such victories? Could January 2019 be the month when we witness such an occasion?
For many teams, reaching the third round is in itself a victory. From there, the serious competition begins. Which teams will remain standing following the matches that will be completed in early January? If you follow football, now would be a good time to follow the odds for these forthcoming matches. There could be a good option or two in there if you guess correctly and pick a result from those on offer. Will you defy the odds and pick the winner this year?
