Sunday February 3, 2019
January saw the remaining fourth round matches being played as the last few days of the month expired. February now sees several replays from the fourth round to determine which teams progress. Some highlights including Brentford vs Barnet on the 5th, QPR vs Portsmouth on the same day, and Wolves vs Shrewsbury, also on the same day.
From there it is time to progress to the fifth round of the competition. Eight matches are currently slated to take place on 16th February, all at 3pm. It looks set to be a busy afternoon, with Chelsea facing Man United, Doncaster facing Crystal Palace, and other matches still to be determined. While some teams have taken their places in the line up already, other spots have yet to be filled. Once the replays are taken care of, we should know who will progress in that part of the competition.
Those who are familiar with the format of the competition will know that the fifth round is still only partway through the competition. There are 12 rounds to be navigated before the semi-finals are reached, beyond which there is the final to determine the outright winner.
The number of matches in each round reduces as more teams are taken out of the running. The fourth round consists of 16 matches, so once the replays are complete, we will know the names of all 16 teams to progress that far. It is then a simple matter of who wins each match to progress to the next stage.
At present, we only know the full line up for three of the eight matches due to be played. However, many would argue the Chelsea vs Man United match is the one to watch. Chelsea are the current champions, having won the title for the eighth time last year. Would anyone count against them doing the same this year? Man United might have something to say about that. All eyes will be on that match when it plays out.
